Guest MOLLY
Ive been looking at some old photos today, and came across one which sparked a memory and got me thinking about how diverse terriers are. Out with the dogs one morning for their walk before leaving for work. I was half way around a grass field when i noticed 2 roe, they must have been lying down and got up and moved when they heard us. Luckily i got the 2 lurchers on the lead before they saw. The deer went behind a large manure pile and i though 'thank god' cos i dont have time in the mornings to be chasing dogs chasing deer I could'nt believe what happened next, did'nt the deer decide to come back out and start to walk towards us, i got Moll on the lead but before i had time to get other 2 terriers on, the deer had started to trot and Doris saw...off she went in full voice with Terra, both completely deaf to my commands!!! The Doe managed to jump the fence into the rough stuff and was away, the buck under pressure twice tried to jump but bounced back the third time he was on the bottom with the 2 terriers. I ran like a loon with the 2 lurchers and Moll screaming and pulling me like crazy to get at him, my lungs were fit to burst by the time i got near. Terra had the nose and Doris a back leg. Told the terriers to 'leave'. Looped the other 3 leads over the fence posts, and walked over to get the terriers, the buck was lying between the bottom 2 strands of wire. When he saw me he up and off into the rough, the terriers away after him again. Khan jumped the fence still tied up, nearly ripped his own head off , Jazz jumped and the lead came off the fence...Mollys came off also....so you can imagine me holding Khan from the other side of the fence...4 dogs chasing, 2 with leads on ..... another lesson learned ...tie them to the bottom of the fence so they cannot jump and impale themselves on the barb, or break a leg on a stray lead Anyways, by the time i got there Jazz had caught him, and he was dead. I had to make a mental note of where he was in the Jacobs rush and long dead grass, so i would find him again. I dragged the dogs home, got in the truck, drove back across 2 fields, dragged the very heavy lump across all the rough to the truck, 3 attempts to lift him in, then drive back home. Quickly chop off his head, gut him, hose him out, and attempt to hang him...then it was hands washed get changed and get to work 20mins late If Terra had'nt got the nose and Doris the leg, that buck most certainly would have escaped. So terriers can be dug to, rat, work with the gun, retrieve etc, bush, track, hold deer. Be used alongside ferrets, mark, and will possibly attempt to kill almost anything regardless of size What else can they or have they done for you? MOLL. Quote Link to post

jultaylor1972 2
My lakeland x is almost through her training as a narcotic detection dog and I really think she'll make the grade Not a traditional breed to train but she has all the qualities that are desired when seeking out a 'potential' narcotic detection dog; her hunting drive is strong, she wont stop searching until she's found the scent of drugs and her intent and indication at the site of drug scents is amazing. We're off to Lancashire in the next few months to hopefully get her a recognised certificate and get her out searching for drugs ASAP. She's also very keen at some rabbit warrens but not others which leads me to think she'll make a great marking dog , I just wish the new season was upon us so I can get her started and hopefully by then she'll be broken to my ferrets too. Ossie 11
I've owned a terrier that insisted i got up at 4 in the morning and directed me to a family member suffering an epileptic fit.... Seizure Alert Dogs dogs can actually be trained to alert an epileptic person to an oncoming seizure, they learn to spot the early warning signs. Quote Link to post
